Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
