Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
